On the ridge separating the Sellustra and Sillaro valleys, at 327m above sea level, once stood Castrum Flagnani, consisting of parish church and castle.
Whether at the foot of this rise or on top of it, you can enjoy breath-taking views of the valley and the underlying natural amphitheatre, a spectacular formation that dates back to the Pliocene era.
The parish church is now gone and only the 13-metre high bell tower still stands. Of the medieval castle, all that remains is the small fortified village about 200 metres southeast of the church, now privately owned. This tiny village was the birthplace of Lamberto Scannabecchi, elected to the papal throne (1124-1130) as Pope Honorius II.
