Casalfiumanese
Sassoleone, located just to the east of the Sillaro creek at 443 m above sea level, is mentioned in sources dating as far back as the 12th century.
It consists of the old castle, with parish church, and a market area that, in ancient times, hosted the weekly market and monthly fair, indicating a thriving local economy.
Although later diminished by war and other misfortunes, traces of its glorious past remain in some of the buildings that overlook Piazza del Leone and the church bell tower; the latter was formerly a fortified tower with an escarpment base and thick walls with archers’ loopholes.
