The castle takes its name from the lords who lived there for centuries. It remains unclear whether they were a noble Imola family who succeeded in extending their influence into the hills or, inversely, a family with roots in Castel del Rio who then expanded down the valley to Imola to compete with the lords of the day.
Despite limited political power, the Cantagallo family managed to hold on to their lands in the face of pressure from their neighbouring rivals, Imola and the Alidosi family.
Today, all that remains of Cantagallo Castle is a ruin. However, its location - easily accessible with a pleasant, undemanding hike - offers stunning views over the valley.
