The San Domenico Museum is located in the former Dominican convent of Imola, a complex founded in the thirteenth century which over time has undergone several reconstructions up to its current form, characterized by two Renaissance cloisters. The Dominicans resided there until 1797, when with the Napoleonic suppression, the convent became barracks. After various events and years of abandonment, the renovation finally began in the 1970s to set up the civic museums.
The San Domenico museum
offers visitors two exhibition itineraries: that of the city's art collections,
which tells the story of the figurative culture of Imola and Romagna with over
600 works including paintings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics and medals,
according to a chronological line that ranging from the fourteenth century to
the present day and the Giuseppe Scarabelli Museum, where geological,
archaeological and naturalistic materials are exhibited, the result of the
initiative of the Imolase scientist whose name the museum still bears today.
