"Claterna" is a name with clearly Etrurian origins, and probably the area in that time hosted a settlement (this seems to be testified by the ruins found). But it was thanks to the Romans that the village, or market forum of the area, grew in importance until it became an administrative and political Municipality. This evolution was also supported by its position along Via Emilia, a powerful military artery that from the Adriatic ports penetrated the Padana Plain Lands. The town followed the same destiny as that of all the other settlements along Via Emilia: it was abandoned and despoiled of all its material from the end of the IV century on, but it was never reconstructed. The locality, with its big archaeological site, is located past Quaderna, between the villages of Osteria Grande (Municipality of Castel S. Pietro) and Maggio (Ozzano Emilia).
