Tossignano in tour
Posted on 14 December 2023
At the centre of Tossignano is Piazza Andrea Costa, with the Church of San Girolamo and the Baronial Palace. which houses the Geological Museum of the Chalk Vein of Romagna. Taking Via San Michele, uphill to Villa Santa Maria, we reach the ruins of the Roman quarry (they are located at the back of the retirement home, you can access them by ringing the bell). Continue along Via Don Angelo Bughetti until you reach the Remains of the Fortress, from where you will enjoy a remarkable panoramic view over the Riva di San Biagio and the Sgarba Valley: this is one of the most iconic and impressive viewpoints of the Regional Park of the Chalk Vein of Romagna. The base of the ruins is the starting point of a path that leads to the multi-purpose Sports field, where you will find the Carved Oak. From here, continue along CAI path 705 to the Casetto di Sansone, walk up into Via Castiglione and Vicolo Saldoni, and return to Piazza Andrea Costa.
If you take the Panoramic route you will see on the left Porta Raimondi, the ancient entrance to the town. If you walk down via XX Settembre, you will enter the Park of San Mamante; from here, a left-hand loop will take you first to the Tramosasso Gorge Viewpoint, then to Minguzzi’s “il soldatone” (the big soldier), a Monument to the Fallen of the First World War.
