Parco del Lungo Sillaro, Castel San Pietro Terme (BO)

Explore the history of the Thermal Waters of Castel San Pietro in an easy loop trail. Starting from the centre of Castel San Pietro Terme with Piazza XX Settembre and Piazzale Vittorio Veneto, walk along the centuries-old Parco delle Terme (Thermal Springs Park) and the Fegatella Fountain: this is where it all began in 1337, when a flock of sick sheep was healed after drinking the water from this spring. Walk along the Laghetto Scardovi (Scardovi Lake) until you reach the Old Sillaro Weir, which appears to have been in standing since 1268. Walk back up to the town centre through the Parco delle Terme, a centuries-old oasis stretching over 4000 square metres along the Sillaro river, then move on to the Parco Lungo Sillaro, with its charming footbridge over the Sillaro and just a stone’s throw from the historical centre. Before you get back to the starting point, a stop at the Cassero is unmissable: this huge military fortification is a testimony of Castel San Pietro’s long history, some of which military. Today, the Cassero houses the municipal theatre.
