Palazzo Miti Zagnoni Raffi - A journey among villas and castles

Situated along the historic Via Emilia road, in the heart of Imola’s town centre, Palazzo Miti Zagnoni-Raffi stands out as one of the town’s most fascinating historic residences. Its elegant façade conceals an artistic heritage that invites visitors to step inside and discover the settings of aristocratic life of yesteryear.
 

The brick façade, understated and harmonious, is characterised by two large twin doorways and an orderly arrangement of pilasters and cornices. Once through the entrance, the monumental staircase leads up to the main floor, where the architecture gives way to a wealth of pictorial decorations.
 

The vaults of select rooms have conserved splendid frescoes painted around 1680 by the brothers Antonio and Giuseppe Rolli, leading figures in Bolognese Baroque painting. The allegorical compositions guide the eye through figures, symbols and painted scenes, in a refined decorative pattern designed to celebrate the prestige of the Miti family.
 

Among the most striking works is Dawn Driving Out the Night, where the theme of the transition from darkness to light takes centre stage on the vault, alongside The Glory of the Miti Family, a testament to the desire to represent the family’s prestige through art.
 

A tour of the historic rooms also offers visitors a chance to appreciate the hall of honour and the grand fireplace, pieces that evoke the atmosphere of a stately home and help one to imagine the life that once filled these rooms.
