Santa Maria in Regola bell tower

This impressive belfry stands on the back of the church. Unfortunately, it is partially hidden by the adjoining modern houses. It was erected in 1180, probably on the ruins of an older and smaller bell tower. It is a round Romanesque tower with arched mullioned windows with one light. These were walled up in the 13th century when the belfry was raised. A new bell room with arched mullioned windows with two lights was built and a Gothic steeple was added which collapsed in 1803.
