Growing techniques:
It grows best in medium-textured soils. Sometimes, rather loose terrains can also be used. The planting density should not exceed 2,000 trees per hectare. The maximum production is 30 tons per hectare. Fruits should be preserved through refrigeration. When sold, Nettarina di Romagna has to show the following features: a smooth skin, a minimum diameter of 25 mm (for yellow-pulp varieties) and of 23 mm (for white-pulp varieties) and a sugar content equal to 11° Brix.

Production area :
Nettarina di Romagna grows in the provinces of Ferrara, Bologna, Forlì and Ravenna. The production area in the province of Bologna includes the municipalities of Borgo Tossignano, Budrio, Casalfiumanese, Castel Guelfo, Castenaso, Fontanelice, Granarolo dell'Emilia, Imola, Medicina, Minerbio, Molinella and Mordano.

Historical and Geographical Information:
The peach-tree belongs to the Rosaceae family. Many varieties exist which are classified into two main species, i.e. “Persica vulgaris” and “Persica laevis”. The latter gave origin to the nectarine peaches, which are popularly called “pesche noci” (walnut peaches) because of their smooth skin. Nectarine peaches have been grown in Romagna since a long time. Indeed, they are mentioned (under the name of “pesche noci”) in “L’economia del cittadino in villa”, a 17th century agriculture treatise written by Vincenzo Tanara, a renowned agronomist from Bologna. The first peach-orchard in Emilia-Romagna can be found in 1898. Located in Giuseppe Gianstefani’s estate in Massalombarda (Ravenna), it marked the beginning of industrial fruit growing in this area.
