The city walls surround the historical centre of Casale Alto. They were probably erected around 1000 when the bishop of Imola, feudatory of this area, had a castle built as a refuge for the inhabitants. The walls have been restored many times since then. In 1548 the castle fell under the control of the Bolognese Count Augusto Ercolani. It was largely destroyed during World War II.
