The healing properties of the water springing from Fonte Fegatella were discovered more than seven centuries ago, in 1338, when a flock suffering from a liver disease was watered at this spring and completely recovered its health ("fegatella" derives from "fegato", which means "liver").
This episode aroused an even greater interest as a few academics were in Castel San Pietro at the time. The Pope had excommunicated Bologna and moved the University to the town upon the Sillaro river.
From then onwards, the water of this spring healed not only animals, but also people. Later, the water was channelled in order to exploit it in the best way.
A drawing dating back to 1830 shows the spring flowing inside a brick channel along viale delle Terme, which, at the time, was only a path surrounded by thick greenery.
In a publication, appeared in the 30's, the spring has changed its aspect again. A small column and a pipe union were added to let water come out. In 1950-54 it was rebuilt for the last time with the support of Azienda Autonoma di Cura e Soggiorno and the Municipal Administration.
Today, the spring features a concrete and stone structure with different water collecting points. It is also possible to halt near the spring sipping its fresh water.
