The recent paving works of Piazza XX Settembre allowed discovering and studying a mediaeval neighbourhood of the XIII century, demolished around half of the XIV century to create the defensive space for the "big fortress" that was being built. The archaeological excavation (up to now the most important of the region in a mediaeval context), has also brought to light wall structures of the 14th century fortress, which developed toward the occidental wall.
Address: Piazza xx Settembre, 40024 Castel San Pietro Terme (BO)
How to get to Castel San Pietro Terme
Several wall stretches of the 14th century defensive building, especially in Via Castelfranco, are still visible today.
Excavations of Piazza XX Settembre, heart of the thermal town, were finalised at the end of 1998.
Today the archaeological site, that had remained open before the eyes of everybody for one and a half year, is no longer accessible, as the paving of Piazza XX Settembre, completely remade, has entirely covered the archaeological site. However, a publication, a video and hundreds of pictures testifying the big works were made. We suggest to contact the Group for the Valorisation of Sillaro Valley in order to get information on this archaeological excavation.
