Former Church of St. Francis

The church was built in the first half of the 17th century on the ruins of a chapel dedicated to the Observant Fathers, erected in 1521.

In 1810 the church was closed and turned into a residential building.

In 1944 the edifice was destroyed by the German troops.

Over the last decades (until 1985), the building was demolished to create a parking area.

In 1985 before starting to build a new residential area, some excavations were carried out by the Archaeological Department of the Region Emilia-Romagna. Among the finds recovered it is worthwhile mentioning: the foundations of the southern part of the church's apse, the foot of a statue which may represent a child, the base of a small column and ceramic fragments.

Excavations also brought to light the ancient city walls (built in 1199, still visible), part of the patrol trench made of bricks and cobbles and surmounted by a vault. Further excavations recovered Roman material such as a furnace, a fireplace, brick fragments, pottery and tiles.
