The millenary Crypt is under S. Maria and S. Lorenzo Church of Varignana.
The origins of the Church and of the Crypt are very ancient.
Some quotations in Calindri work of 1783 testify that the building dates back to IX and X centuries and it was erected upon a previous worship place.
The first documents dating back to 1300 report that the church was a worship place of Montecerere parish church.
The crypt was restored in 1924, but soon stopped because of the War.
They restarted in 1946 with different methodology, and they were finished in 1958, during the reconstruction of the damaged church.
The last restauration lead by Municipal Administration ended in 1999.

How to get to Castel San Pietro Terme
Following SS.9 via Emilia, you reach San Nicolò. Turn towards the hill and follow the road signs to Varignana and you arrive at the small square of the hamlet near which the church is situated.
