The church dates back to the 8th century.
It was built in a Pre-Romanesque style but underwent several changes throughout the centuries, especially during the Baroque period.
The present was restored to bring back its original Romanesque appearance and to cancel the damages caused by the Second World War.

How to get to Castel San Pietro Terme
From Bologna, follow the highroad Via Emilia (SS 9), go past Osteria Grande and turn right when getting to San Niccolò towards the hills of Varignana, one of Castel San Pietro's hamlets. Drive on to reach the small square of Varignana.
Nearby there is the church of St. Lawrence.
Under the church there is a crypt of the 8th century.
