Acque Minerali park is the green lung of Imola.
It is mainly known as a recreational area, but it also has a botanical and historical value.
It is located in the southwestern area of town and it is surrounded by the racetrack "Enzo and Dino Ferrari". In 1830 Dr. Gioacchino Cerchiari discovered the curative mineral sulphureous spring waters which made the area very popular. In 1871 the area was then transformed into a park, with paths and flower beds, after the English models.
Today the park (11 hectares) has a rich collection of local and exotic plants. The wooded hill called "Monte Castellaccio", a famous prehistoric site, rises in the middle of the area.
The park was renovated in the spring of the year 2000 to add some amenities: it has now two children's playgrounds, a geological path which goes up to Monte Castellaccio, a pond where several birds nest and the Fountain "Naturalmente" which indicates the northern entrance. In the western part, a monument dedicated to Ayrton Senna has been placed to mark the area where the driver had the deadly accident. The park also hosts an open-air disco during the summer months.
