Palazzo Comunale - Town Hall

The Town Hall rises in the heart of Imola in a pedestrian area.

It consists of two buildings connected, like in the Middle Ages, by a large vault above Via Emilia.
Under the portico and on the façade overlooking Via Emilia stand some anthropomorphic and zoomorphic capitals in grey sandstone and remnants of an older Romanesque building.

The portico, supported by Gothic arches, was renovated during the works carried out between the 13th and the 14th century.
The present building is the result of the extensive restoration works conducted in the second half of the 18th century. The main façade over looking Piazza Matteotti is made less severe by a balcony.

Two paintings of the Patron Saints Cassiano and Pier Grisologo, and a niche housing a sculpture of the Virgin with the Child (by Clelio and Giovanni Foschini from Ravenna) stand above it.
The large doorway, surmounted by a Roman arch, leads to the entrance hall.

A large staircase leads up to the first floor.

The first two rooms feature 16th and 17th century furniture. On the left is the "Green Room", a conference hall which was the seat of CLN (National Committee for the Liberation of Italy) in 1945. It contains an elegant rococo mirror and 18th century portraits.

The large "Council Hall" houses busts of famous people born in Imola. Near the entrance are the last three rooms, all of them in rococo style and featuring gold-framed mirrors and Murano chandeliers. Master Dalla Nave frescoed the ceilings with mythological scenes.

One of these, the "Red Room", contains a copy of Guido Reni's "Slaughter of the Innocents".
The last room to be visited is the Town Hall's former chapel, which is now used as a meeting room.
