This Church is probably the most ancient one in the city, as the seat already hosted a church in the 6th century.

As a Benedictine abbey it had a primary role in the political life of the city: for example, in 1159 the ambassador of Barbarossa signed and issued the acts of protection of Imola here.
The Olivetan Friars who occupied the place until 1830 renewed in the 16th century and in the 17th century the building.
The current aspect of the church is due to the restoration projected by Cosimo Morelli in the 18th century, showing the peculiar neo-classical style.
The brickwork front has some Baroque features and a Doric-order decoration.
The square-hall inside has a painted caisson vault.
The second chapel on the left keeps under the altar the white marble sarcophagus of Saint Sigismondo (1372).

In the presbytery, the area in front of the main altar is in Byzantine style, rich in marble mosaics.

Nearby the church there is the Cloister of the former Convent of the Olivetans.
