The history of the church is linked to the Hierosolymitian Order of Malta, which spread throughout Europe during the 12th century with hospital aims.

The church was the ancient parsonage of the Hospital of Jerusalem.
The building was completely renewed during the 16th century when the old entranceway was replaced by the present one.

The building's inside decorations were restored in the 19th century.
On the portal there are marble bas-reliefs of 1541 representing the armorial bearing of the lineage of Paul III.
